PlayCajon EP 07: David Mortara

When it comes to the cajon and Afro-Peruvian culture, David Mortara could most certainly be considered an expert. His journey into the cajon and Afro-Peruvian culture began after a chance meeting with one of Peru’s most respected cajon players Eusebio Sirio Castillo ”Pititi”.  In 2002 he was named a research fellow for the center for latin american culture studies at Kings Collage London and after his extensive research and learning of the cajon and the culture, David is now one of the world’s most highly respected authorities on the subject. In this episode we hear about David’s amazing journey into this culture and the history that surrounds the cajon. We also learn about types of Afro-Peruvian rhythms, as well as hearing David play examples of the rhythms and some other incredible percussion instruments from the tradition.
