TED Ed Lesson: Rhythm in a box

In March 2015 I was delighted to announce that TED Ed had published my lesson video, Rhythm in a box: The story of the cajon drum. It is an animation that tells the story of how the cajon came to be.

Myself, the TED Ed team, and animator Avi Ofer worked on the project over a period of 6 months. We first came up with a script that was rigorously fact checked. I then did the narration which was then sent to Avi who came up with a first draft of the animation. At that point I had something to create the music to. After a bit of tweaking back and forth we had it.

With this animation I wanted to tell the story of what is the widely accepted history of the cajon. I wish I had more time to go into further detail and talk about Cuban cajon, and other cajon traditions but the goal of this lesson was to share the story of how the cajon grew out of the Afro-Peruvian tradition.
